Drill Machine

Introduction

A drill machine is a tool that is used generally for driving fasteners or making small round holes in the cement, wall, wood and many other similar hard surfaces. Although, some drills that are powered drills consists a hammer function as well.

Drill machines can be varied according to the size, power and speed. They can be both corded powered and cordless battery powered.

Mostly projects regarding woodworking, metalworking, machine tools, constructions, utility and fabrications requires use of machine drill. There are also specially designed drills versions, that can be made for small applications, space and medicines.

Types

There are various types of drills. Some of those are powered electrically, some uses compressed air, internal combustion engine, while some are manually powered. Type of drill needed on the hard surface such as concrete, brick or rock requires mostly hammer drills, while obtaining oil or water from the earth needs Drilling rigs to hole onto the surface of earth.

Various types are –

  • Manual

Brace  – A brace is a type of drill that has U formed wrench/outline that helps to make hole and drill in to the wood. The breadth handle helps in to build more tension, weight and torque, while handle helps in to make hole in the wood.  These types of drills are mostly used by carpenters and construction workers.

Gimlet

Hand drill

Cranial drill – isa type of drill that is used for skull surgery by surgeons.

Breast – has flat chest piece in place of a handle

  • Corded

This is the most commonly used type of drill which has a pistol grip. This type of drill can accompany with various types of other tools for different types of operations. This type of drills brings down the overall cost of the operation because of the availability and small size.

  • Cordless

This type of drill is the same as the corded drill but doesn’t require any cord or wire to perform its function. This type of the drill uses rechargeable battery and is similar to mainspowered AC drill. This type of drill also helps in driving screws into the surface. These drills varies according to the different size of batteries. Heavier the battery is, more torque and power the drill can provide. Mostly lithium ion batteries or nickel-cadmium batteries are used to power these cordless drills.

  • Hammer

These hammer drill is similar to that of standard electric drill. Most of the electric hammer drills are rated between 600 to 1000 watt.

Types Of Drilling Machine

Drilling is defined as a material cutting process to create a hole or to dig deep into a material. According to the research 75% of all metal cutting material i.e. removed originates from the drilling process.

Drilling machines are designed according to the depth of the surface. There are basically two types of drilling machines, the pillar drill and the other one is bench drill. The bench drill is used to drill holes on various types of materials like metals, plastic and wood. The Bench drilling machine is fixed to a bench with the help of tightly fitted bolts to drill large size of material at a faster pace. The target acquired by this drill is fixed and can also handle drilling at various angles. The attachment of drill is attached to a chuck at one end and then rotated around while high pressure is imposed against the target material. The tip of the cutting instrument and its edges play a vital role in the work of cutting.

History Of Drilling Machine

You might have heard about Homo-sapiens in your history books. Homo-sapiens discovered the first-ever application of the rotary tools, they build their first rotary equipment. They used a pointed rock and applied rolling operations with their hands to create a hole through another material. As they extended their research, they started using a thin finished stick and attached it with the flint point to reduce friction and increase to the speed of drilling. Successfully, later on, it was considered as the first-ever hand drill.

Drilling Machine Types

Portable Drilling Machine (Hand Drilling Machine) :

A portable drilling machine is widely used because it can be easily carried anywhere. It is used for drilling holes at small surface areas, extreme angles and any position and this is not possible if we make use of standard drills. It’s quite compact and can drill from 12mm to 18mm in diameter. The speed of a portable drilling machine is high as compared to other drills.

Sensitive Drilling Machine:

Drilling of small holes at high speed is done seamlessly with the help of sensitive drilling machine. The handling of this machine is a bit tough so the base of this machine is mounted on the bench with bolts for its smooth handling. It can easily drill up to 15 mm in diameter. This machine is named so because the operator can sense its progress of drill due to hand feed.

Radial Drilling Machine:

Radial drilling machine can work on a medium to the large surface area of workpieces. It is a very heavy drill and is mounted on a large base. Radial arms are attached to the column, it’s a movable part and can be swung around to various positions. There are other parts of the machine like base, column, radial arm, driving mechanism and drill head.

Base: The base is rectangular in shape and is easily mounted on the floor.

Radial Arm: Radial arm is mounted parallel to the base and it is easily adjusted vertically. This arm may swung around the column.

Column: Column is defined as a cylindrical casting, and it is easily mounted at one end in a vertical direction.

Drill head: It is used to run the drill at various speeds and a motor is mounted on the top of the drill head.
