Radial Drilling Machine

What is Radial Drilling Machine?

The radial drilling machine is an industrial product and specially designed and manufactured for large and heavy work items. A quality radial drilling machine is basically designed to perform the drilling action on any specified place and position without moving the large and heavy work item. The column of this drilling machine with the help of arm facilitates the work item by adjusting its position in upwards and downward directions. The most amazing feature of the this machine is its flexibility which has eased out the drilling operations in the industry on large and heavy work items.

Working Principle

Working Principle of Radial Drilling machine is basically same as of drilling machine wherein rotating edge attached on the head of the drill applies a force on work item to create a hole and remove the excess material. Radial drilling machine allows the big and large work item to settle down without any need to re-position the heavy and big article, again and again, drilling is performed on different position by adjusting the position of the column with the help of the arm.

Parts of Radial Drilling Machine and Its Importance

Here are some of its important parts as follows:

Base

The base of the machine is made up of cast iron due to its required strength. The Base supports the column and the table both. Work item on which drilling operation is to be performed is mounted on the table which is mounted on the other end of the base. Radial drilling machine used in heavy manufacturing industry comes with two bases to support placing and removing work item on one hand and carry on the drilling operation on another hand

Column

This part is fixed on the one end of the base. A motor is placed on the top of the column to which allows the movement of the arm. Since this machine is supposed to support the drilling operation in heavy and large work items, column enables accommodate the arm for drilling operation at different positions.

Radial Arm

Radial arm is placed on the column and is expandable in the horizontal position up to its length. Radial arm is actually a mechanical tool which supports the drill head.

Drill Head

The drill head is affixed on the radial arm and which in turn facilitates it to adjust at any position on the radial arm. The drill head is adjusted on the work item and performed the task of generating hole when force is applied through the power motor. It operates on different feeds and speed during drilling operations.

Spindle

The spindle is that part of the this machine which rotates and holds the drill chuck. It is the spindle that is responsible for rotating function of radial drilling machines. Now with advanced technology, new machines are supporting multi-spindle and multi-drill head.

Difference between Pillar Drilling Machine and Radial Drilling Machine

Pillar Drilling Machine

Pillar Drilling Machine

A Drilling Machine is also known as pillar drilling machine or drill press. it has a column attached with base and a bed to hold work item. But the reach of the drill is limited and fixed.

Radial Drilling Machine

Radial Drill Machine

A radial drill press is an advanced version of s drilling machine specially designed for big and heavy work items which allow the greater degree of freedom and flexibility. This machine provides the convenience of performing drilling operation on the different position of the heavy and big work items without making them move. And this machine is opted due to its capability of positioning its drill head on the work items with adjusting the radial arm.

Drilling Machine

What is Drilling Machine?

The quality drilling machine is pedestal drilling machine where the inbuilt motor is used to make holes of different sizes in solid based different kinds of material like wood, plastic, metal etc. We can also say it pillar drilling machine or Drill Press.

The principle of the working of Drilling Machine

A spindle of drilling machine makes the drill to turn on the workpiece either in auto or manual mode to make a hole and remove the extra material. A sharp edge of the drill is placed on the surface of an object to make a hole with the exertion of speed and force for rotating the edge of the drill.

Parts of drilling machines and its Functions

Drill press or drilling machine is one of the most common and used tools. It is being used in all types of manufacturing and assembling industries. All the parts of drilling machine participate in its functioning. A brief description of the parts of the drill machine with its functions is mentioned below.

Head

This is the top most part of the drilling machine which is placed on the top of the spindle. It supports the upward and downward movement of the spindle. Head is responsible for hosting and supporting spindle, pulley, and motor.

Spindle

The Spindle is one of the most important parts of the drill machine.  It is spindle which hosts the drill and makes it rotate. The spindle is held on the drilling machine with the support of a belt. The spindle is placed on the chuck

Column

The column is in the shape of rode and is made of cast iron. It is basically designed to place a drill on the table. The position of table and column is better explained in the angle of 90 degrees. During the process of drilling, it is used to hold the table steady for ensuring the accuracy of cutting and making a hole.

Table

The table is an important part of the drilling machine. It is used to hold the workpiece during the process of drilling. Shape and size of the table can vary as per the requirement of the jobs in which drilling is required; the table can be round or rectangular. Its place in the 90 degree angle of column, and can be moved in any direction as per the task like upward, downward, and move around.

Base

The base is the part on which drilling machine is placed. This part is made of cast iron due to its required strength. The base is basically used to support and balance the column during the process of drilling and adjusting the spindle

Electric Motor

This part of the drilling machine is used to supply the power for its working is known as the power transmission. There are some tools which used to the supply of power to control the speed of the drill. The whole process of supply transmission needs the help of the v-bolt and pulleys.

Use of Drilling Machine

Using of the drilling machine is not difficult, especially when you are aware of it’s all parts and their functioning. This machine is basically designed to resolve the drilling purpose in the workshops, factories, and industries. It is commonly used by mechanics, carpenters and factory workers.

Lathe Machinery – Introduction, Working, Parts & its Roles

Brief Introduction

big-bore-lathe-machine-500x500A lathe machine is a basic machine tool which is used in all industries across the world. This is used to hold, to rotate and to remove a work piece while performing operations like cutting, drilling, turning, facing, knurling, grooving etc. Basically, lathe machinery is used to give the shape and size to the metal with the help of other machine tools which are being applied to the given work piece. It is the basic machine that every engineering student studying in manufacturing stream learns first.

Working of lathe Machinery

The lathe machine works on the very simple mechanism, it holds the workpiece between centers and makes it get rotated on axis for the operations like cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, turning, but all the operations like cutting, turning sanding etc. are performed with the help of other machine tools. Lathe machinery is like a supporting infrastructure for all operations needs to be performed on work pieces in metal and wood.

Let us see in brief the various steps in a simple way.

  1. A work piece is fixed at the centre of the chuck. A chuck may have three to four hold as per requirement.
  2. The spindle is started and the required speed is fixed. Here, the speed of spindle plays a very important role since speed impacts the operation of tool used to give the desired shape to the workpiece.
  3. It is the time to introduce required tool for performing operations like cutting, turning etc.
  1. After introducing the tool it is the time to feed a workpiece. It is also important and worth mentioning that the feed rate is also required to set while performing operations.
  1. Not it’s the time for action and when required action is performed on the workpiece in metal or wood. Here all the extra stuff is removed by tools.
