Planner Machine

Planner machine – Brief description of parts and best working practices

What is a Planer Machine

The planner machine comes in the category of heavy machinery which is used to create a flat surface on large and heavy work items. Work items are placed on the table and cutting tool is moved in the required direction lie horizontal, vertical and diagonal.

The purpose of the article is to make aware of the best practices for working on the planner machine. And for this, the brief description of the working principal and the parts of planner machine is a must.

Working Principle

A planer machine works on mechanism wherein reciprocatory action is performed on the work. A planner Machine is like a shaper machine; in shaper machine cutting tools moves but in planner machine work piece is adjusted.

Construction of Planner Machine

Let us have a very brief description of the construction of planner machine. The major parts of the Planner machine are table and bed, cross rail, housings, tool rails, driving and feed mechanism and their working importance is listed below.

Table and Bed :

Both bed and table are made of cast iron due to the required strength. The bed is the flat surfaced affixed on the t shaped stand known as a table. The work item is clamped on the flat surface.

Cross rail

The cross rail moves upward and on vertical movement with the support of sideways and accommodate the work item at different height positions.

Housings:

These are affixed in the centre of both sides of the base and are also made of cast iron.

Tool heads:

Tool heads are responsible for holding the cutting tool used in the planner operation. Two tool heads are placed on the cross rail.

Driving and feed mechanism

Driving and feed mechanism is actually responsible for performing the operation and it may be manual or motor power driven.

Best practices to be followed while working on Planner Machine

The purpose of mentioning the best practices to be followed while working on a planner machine is to ensure the safety and security of work force.

  • Training to the fresher is must and in the initial stage, it is recommended that operation to be performed under the monitoring of an experienced resource.
  • There should be an emergency stop button in the reach of the operator and person operating should be well aware of this.
  • Planner machine should be well placed and there should be required space around the machine to perform the work.
  • Timely maintenance should be performed on a machine to keep all the tools and parts in good working condition and ensure to place a chart on the machine.
  • Appropriate body suit along with the gloves and safety glasses should be used by staff.
  • Cleaning and brushing of the machine should be performed once the machine is switched off and work item is removed.
  • Safety devices should be readily available at the work station and staff should be trained to use these under unpleasant circumstances.
  • While performing the task, make ensure that there should be sufficient clearance time between work
  • Guards, clamps tool heads should be checked before starting the operation.
  • Never make in changes during the operation even it is minute in nature.
  • The setting of the depth of a cut tool and the feed rate are interrelated and important to take the appropriate time while setting the feed mechanism.
  • Oiling and greasing of the machine is very important so paste the chart to track the frequency
  • Keep the working area clean and clear of tools, scraps, oil and other unwanted substances.

Lathe Machines

Small Lathe Machines

Being the old and the most useful tool need for the leading generation. In the earlies of 1569, Lathe machines were build-up of wooden material used to carve the shapes of products that were considered as raw. After Industrial Revolution these machines come up with a new advancement in the cutting technology and improvement in the machine speeds. The speed of the machine can be easily varied according to the needs. The cutting tool was changed to the metal and shape was elongated with extra sharpen edges. Today, the up-gradation in the lathe has not only reduced the production cost and manufacturing time but produces a fine output.

Features Of Small Lathe Machines:

1. Backgear: Backgear in mounted at the back of the headstock of Lathe and this helps to increase the turning power and more torque is produced. It runs as faster as 200rpm speed.

2. Screw Cutting: Inch and metrix screw thread can be built accuracy and versatility. Thorough knowledge of different principles of threads as well as procedures of cutting is required. The angle of the thread, depth, major diameter, minor diameter, pitch diameter, thread fit and metric threads are some of the main key factors of screw cutting.

3. Tumble Reverse: The direction of the lead screw and the feed rod is maintained by the tumble gear. The movement of the tumble carriage is from the tailstock to the head stock.

4. T-Slot fitting provision: Vertical mounting of large jobs are done with the help of T-slot fitting provisions. A t-slot cutter or a milling cutter is required. The side milling cutter is used to cut the workpiece in slots equal in width as well as in depth.

5. 2 Morse Taper in Tailstock: The foot stock of the lathe is named to be the tail stock. It is used in conjunction with the rotary table on a milling machine. Tail stock is relative longer than other part of the machines. The functioning of the machine is not fulfilled without tailstock, if its not used then the machine will “CHATTER”

Interesting facts about lathe:

1. You can easily find manyinexpensive lathe that are similar to the expensive one. The quality of the lathe matter to produce a good output. For the entry level inexpensive one are perfect but as the demand and the load on the lower priced machine will form a limiting effect on our work.

2. If you are talking about the machine tools then weight of the machines comes under the main factor. The more heavier your machine, the more rigid and vibration free performance can be seen. The best lathe machines are always heavier than the normal one as if we compare cast-iron lathe with the fabricated one then we will notice that cast iron is heavier than fabricated one.

HORIZONTAL BORING MACHINE, ITS PARTS & FUNCTIONAL IMPORTANCE

What is Boring Machine?

A boring machine is a machine which is used for boring large holes on the articles or work items which are not possible to move or rotate on the machine. It is one of the most useful machines which is used on heavy articles like engines, frames, cylinders, land etc. on which the operation of lathe and drilling machine is not possible.

What is Horizontal Boring Machine?

Horizontal boring machines are used to bore large holes in a horizontal direction. Horizontal boring machine is the heavy duty machinery which is used for the boring on large work items which are more in immovable nature, heavy, difficult to balance etc. And it performs multiple tasks like boring, turning, milling, cutting, grinding etc

Horizontal Boring Machine Vs Vertical Boring Machine

The Major Difference

The main difference between the vertical boring machines and the horizontal boring machine is the machine installation and configuration pattern. That means the positioning of operation tools and the placement of work item.

Vertical Boring Machine

In the vertical type of boring machine configuration, the operational tool is placed like normal lathe machinery and performs all the normal lathe machinery functions like cutting, turning, boring, threading etc.

Uses- Vertical boring machines are used in turbines, tires, pipelines, large frames, machine tables etc.

Horizontal Boring Machine

Horizontal boring machine is basically used when boring operation is to be performed on larger parts. In this machine, the spindle is positioned in horizontally and the spindle is placed in the parallel position to the table and ground both.

Uses- Horizontal boring machine is used in boring, shaping, facing, milling and drilling. One of the major uses is when parts are larger in size and crane is to be placed overhead.

Working of Horizontal Boring Machine

Horizontal Boring Machine remains static and the boring tool is rotated. Holes are bored by using boring bars and tools. To bore a hole, the boring tool is affixed on the spindle and the cutter is adjusted on the bar in a specifically required dimension. The major factor in boring is its required measure of the bore in length and sphere.

Parts and Functional Importance of Horizontal Boring Machine

The description and functional importance of parts of the horizontal boring machine is listed below

1.     Bed

A bed is made of cast iron and affixed on the ground. It is placed in the position to support table and column.

2.      Column for Supporting Headstock and Ends

The column is also made of cast iron and provides the support to the headstock and which is moved in an upward and downward direction through the sideways. The column supporting sideways or guide ways is placed at the bed.

3.      Headstock

The headstock is placed on the support of the column and holds the operation tool. A headstock moves in an upward and downward direction for settling the operation tool on the required height of work.

4.     Table

The table is used to support the work during the boring operation, it provides the T position for holding different parts of the boring machine.

5.      Saddle

The saddle is that part which allows the work item to move in longitude motion on the bed. The saddle also controls the speed of movement through manual or motor is driven force.

6.      Boring Bars

Boring bars are used to hold cutter, spindle, column for the boring operation and supports depends upon the level of boring operation like bore diameter, deep depth or short depth holes etc.
